Committees

Business Education

The Business Education Committee coordinates the educational and professional development of HUWIB's members through a variety of means such as workshops, panels, and semester-long programs. These events are targeted at further developing HUWIB Associates by providing them with the skills necessary to be successful in the business world. The Committee facilitates the Career Development events, which provide HUWIB Associates with the skills necessary to further develop their business acumen. Examples of this include a Miss Mannersmith etiquette dinner, Excel training workshops, Laura Mercier/Nieman Marcus fashion consultation, and Spotlight on a Culture of the World dinner.

Moreover, the Committee oversees the InFocus Program, which is unique in its emphasis on in-depth, hands-on business education as a way to develop understanding of and passion for a particular career field. This semester, the InFocus Program tracks offered were Finance and Consulting and included engaging workshops and interactive seminars facilitated by corporate professionals and HBS affiliates.

Lastly, the Business Education Committee provides HUWIB members with the opportunity to impact the community through philanthropic ventures. Our largest philanthropic initiative is the Young Women in Business Conference held in the fall, attracting high school girls from the entire Boston area to participate in a series of workshops and panels aimed at exposing them to the world of business opportunities and careers. Overall, the Business Education Committee focuses on providing thorough education to HUWIB Associates after completion of the WIBternship, and as such is an integral component to the further development of members.

Corporate Development

The Corporate Development Committee coordinates the professional development of HUWIB's members by organizing external mentorship programs, business school relationships, alumni networking, and job/internship searches. The Committee oversees programs that facilitate relationships with organizations and corporations in the professional community. As relations with individuals in the professional community are pivotal to the success of the organization and provide Associates with valuable skills, this Committee works to establish and further develop these relationships. By collaborating with alumni, business school students, and corporate representatives, this Committee is responsible for working with individuals in various positions in their careers. The relationships the Committee develops continue to grow with time and greatly impact the organization.

This year, the Corporate Development Committee expanded the Corporate Mentorship Program by 33% from last year, with 46 mentor/mentee pairs as well as partnerships with 10 leading corporations in Finance, Consulting, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Consumer Products, and Biotechnology. All mentees will have the unique opportunity to visit their mentors at their company, thanks to generous sponsorship by Morgan Stanley. This committee also launched the first-ever Business School Mentorship program, with 25 mentor/mentee pairs in its very first year! Job Search/Recruiting has organized numerous events through the semester aimed at equipping HUWIB Associates with the tools needed to effectively find a job/internship. Events include a Networking Workshop with acclaimed author and networking specialist Diane Darling, Mock Interview events, and more. Senior/Alumni Relations has maintained excellent contact with seniors and alumni by organizing Senior Social events, Senior Spotlight dinners, and by distributing the Alumni Newsletter to over 250 HUWIB Alumni. The Corporate Development Committee has had a successful semester and is looking forward to a great year!

Fundraising

The Fundraising Committee aims to secure the necessary sponsorships and grants so that HUWIB members have the resources to explore a variety of business opportunities in educational settings. Members of the Fundraising Committee collaborate and maintain relationships with corporate sponsors, start-up companies, grant foundations, potential advertisers, and local businesses to raise funds for HUWIB. The Fundraising Committee works closely with all of the Committees to fund their events by reaching out to specific companies that would be interested in being involved in each unique event. In particular, the Fundraising Committee works closely with the Intercollegiate Business Convention, Outreach and Business Education Committees to plan the annual IBC, the annual trips to New York, Boston, and a new destination, and to plan the InFocus educational program as well as the Young Women in Business Convention. This is an ideal Committee for anyone who wants to gain experience in establishing long-term business relationships with corporate sponsors and to learn how to professionally represent an organization through formulating deals.

Intercollegiate Business Convention

The Intercollegiate Business Convention Committee is responsible for planning and executing the Intercollegiate Business Convention. The Committee is split up into three sub-committees which are responsible for organizing the programming, marketing, and logistical aspects of the IBC. All three sub-committees work with each other to bring together high-profile keynote speakers, prominent panelists, and over 500 students from over 30 universities together in a forum which provides participants with real business education and experience. Committee members are given much creative freedom to formulate various aspects of the IBC, such as the theme, workshop and panel topics, speaker invitations, and promotion strategies. In addition, they cultivate strong event planning skills, and gain ample practice with maintaining professional correspondence, using excel, and managing online databases. The IBC committee recently hosted its pre-conference event, Risky Business: A Blackjack Tutorial with David Irvine and Bill Kaplan, player and coach for the original MIT Blackjack Team featured in the book "Bringing Down The House" and the recent movie "21". The event, open to all of campus, drew in a crowd of over 250 students, filling Quincy Dining Hall. Mr. Irvine and Mr. Kaplan discussed their life stories, how to approach risk at the card table and in life, and gave students tips on how to make quick decisions.

Internal Events and Recruitment

The Internal Events and Recruitment Committee aims to reach two groups of people—those who are already HUWIB Associates and those seeking to become HUWIB Associates. The Internal Events and Recruitment Committee aims to foster a strong internal community in the organization. This Committee is responsible for encouraging members to interact and continue to learn from one another, both during and after the WIBternship, a semester-long comp process in which new HUWIB members learn more about opportunities in business through weekly meetings. Notable speakers like Carolyn Kepcher from The Apprentice and Steve Black, the CEO of J.P Morgan, and representatives from top consulting firms, entertainment companies, and financial institutions have been represented on our weekly panels. Developing and implementing the programming for the WIBternship is a major part of the Committee, as well as managing the Internal Mentorship Program, which pairs WIBterns with HUWIB Associates in the spring and fall semester. In an effort to create greater cohesion within the organization, the Mentorship Program aims to establish connections not only based on an interest in business but also other academic, social, extracurricular, and career interests. The Committee is responsible for creating a social outlet by planning various internal social events to promote greater interaction among existing HUWIB members. Lastly, Internal Events and Recruitment prioritizes giving its committee members further knowledge and a skill set valuable for performing their responsibilities in HUWIB and for the future.

Outreach

The Outreach Committee seeks to facilitate the professional development of HUWIB members by exposing them to the various opportunities available in the business world after graduation. Both branches of the Outreach committee allow HUWIB Associates to have close contact with a broad range of industries and companies, and give them the opportunity to interact with prominent business figures. The Trips branch includes the New York and Career Exploratory trips which provide opportunities to sample a variety of fields, with the New York trip focusing especially on finance, and the Career Exploratory trip covering a greater breadth of industries, such as media, entertainment, and entrepreneurship. Past Career Exploratory trips have taken HUWIB Associates to Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, and San Francisco, CA. The Boston Outreach Branch includes the Boston Trip and Shadowing/Externships. This branch gives HUWIB Associates the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the work responsibilities and corporate culture of organizations and/or industries they are interested in without having to commit to a summer internship or full-time offer with uncertainty. This spring the Outreach Committee has given girls the opportunity to shadow marketing firms and also divisions within the Boston Red Sox. After a successful fall externship with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), HUWIB girls will once again be externing with BCG and other established firms this fall. The Outreach program seeks to continue finding similar initiatives in diverse locations both in the U.S.
